In 1991, Ukraine gained independence, for which he had fought for decades. But for Chornovil, the very emergence of an independent state was not the end point.

He understood that independence must be filled with meaning.

Today, many things that he spoke about decades ago are perceived by us completely differently, with a deeper understanding of their meaning.

The story of Vyacheslav Chornovil reminds us that the independence of Ukraine did not magically appear one day along with the appearance of one of the documents proclaiming it.

Generations of Ukrainians fought for it, gave their lives for it and lost their own freedom.
